How to test your touchpad
- Tracking: slide one finger slowly across the whole box. The trail should be smooth with no jumps or gaps.
- Clicks: press the bottom-left and bottom-right of the touchpad, and try a one-finger tap. Green dots are left clicks, yellow dots are right clicks.
- Two-finger scroll: drag two fingers up, down, left and right.
- Pinch zoom: pinch two fingers together and apart.
Three- and four-finger gestures (switching apps, showing the desktop) are handled by Windows or macOS and can't be detected by a website.
Touchpad not working? Try this
- Touchpad off: many laptops have a touchpad key, often F6, F7 or Fn + F5, or a double-tap in the top-left corner (HP).
- Windows settings: open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Touchpad and make sure it's on, with tap and scroll gestures enabled.
- Driver: reinstall the Synaptics, ELAN or Precision touchpad driver from your laptop maker's support site.
- Jumpy pointer: clean and dry the touchpad and your fingers. A swollen battery can also press on the touchpad from below; get that checked urgently.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my touchpad is working properly?
The trail should follow your finger smoothly, clicks and taps should register every time, and two-finger scroll and pinch should be counted in the boxes above.
Why is two-finger scrolling not working?
Scrolling may be turned off in touchpad settings, or the touchpad driver may be missing. Check Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Touchpad and update the driver.
Can I test a touchscreen here?
Yes. Touch and multi-finger touches are detected, and the maximum number of fingers is shown.
